Scavenger, Darkwind: Scavenger, or DW:S are all names for the hardcore mode of Darkwind: War on Wheels.

Darkwind:Scavenger - more apocalypse, less country-club
Darkwind:Scavenger is a new game within Darkwind.
In DW:Scav, there is no money. Stuff breaks much faster. You will find yourself scrounging up enough food and water to survive, and feeling lucky if you can field a not-too-badly worn pair of machine guns on your car.
Life in DW:Scav is short and harsh - it returns Darkwind to its post-apocalyptic roots. More apocalypse, less country-club.
To create your Scavenger gang, you must be a Darkwind Subscriber. Open your 'My Gang' page and you will see a button to create your Scavenger gang, which will operate as a separate gang to your regular Darkwind gang. You can switch from your "Normal gang" to your "Scavenger gang" by clicking the switch option.

Basic Rules
* No access to money
* No access to NPC markets or services
* No access to standard DW player markets
* Every player is given two gangs, one for standard mode, and one for scavenger mode.
** Only one gang can be active/selected at a time. If your Scavenger gang is active, your normal gang will not receive weekly training
* PvP is open everywhere, including Somerset
* Gang members do not get weekly training, only field training
* To repair vehicles you need scrap metal and mechanic skill 50+. The amount of materials required depends on the damage done.
* To repair vehicle components you need car parts and mechanic skill 100+. The amount of materials required depends on the damage done.

Startup
When you sign up for DW:Scav you will find your lockup in Somerset already stocked with some of the basics to keep you going for a little while. A very little while. You get the following:

* 10 x Water Bulk Goods Units
* 10 x Food Bulk Goods Units
* 10 x Cans of Fuel
* 10 x Car Parts Bulk Goods Units
* 10 x Scrap Metal Bulk Goods Units
* 6 x Machine Gun Magazines

Your scav gang starts with 8 losers...erm gang members with a variety of skills. Each gang member requires 0.75 units of food and water every Thursday morning otherwise they will start to become ill, and their Activity Level will reduce. Depending on your Leadership skill you can recruit more gang members from Dexter's, or other taverns in other towns once you get farther afield. Of course this is more mouths to feed!

It doesn't matter where the food and water is located across the towns of Evan, as long as you have enough for the total of your gangers, although this may change.

Town Events
You can enter a town event as usual in DW:Scav. Don't forget to select an event where vehicles are provided or you may find you accidentally signed up with a wreck that you recently looted! There is no fee to enter these events.
Scav gangs may find themselves pitted against normal DW gangs as well as NPCs and other scav gangs.

Prizes for the events are listed on the event's web page. It appears that you may be more likely to win particular prizes in different towns.

Vehicle rentals
There is no access to vehicle rentals in DW:Scav. However, you can enter a Amateur Night Combat town event to win a car. The winner of these events gets to keep the vehicle they fought in....whats left of it.

Scouting
Scouting or travelling as a scav gang works the same as for normal DW scouts but scavs and normal gangs can not scout together. It is ill advised to scout by yourself in normal DW, this is even more important as a scav gang.
The enemies you come accross as a scav gang will also be in various states of repair.
Should you successfully defeat your opponent you will be presented with the looting page as usual. You will find that weapons salvaged are not 100%.
Don't forget you may have a return encounter, looting vehicles with damaged engines could be risky!
Whilst it may be desirable to scout for traders to plunder, bear in mind you may upset the local Civ faction. If the local militia become too upset they may not let you escape into Somerset. This may not seem important but remember with damaged cars looted you may need to escape rather than fight!
If travelling to other towns make sure you consider the fuel to get back or carry on you plans out in the wilderness - there may not be any fuel where you are going!

Trading
Trading is key in DW:Scav as it is unlikely that you can get by solo. In the market place you can list your items for trading and add sellers notes, perhaps to say what you are looking for in return. Beware. There is an element of trust with trades. If you give someone the password to "buy" your items on the promise of a password to their goods in the trade its possible they may not. This doesn't happen often as offenders will get a name for themselves and an inability to trade could be catastrophic!

Tips from other Scavengers
Fuel

* Unlike normal darkwind, you always want to syphon the fuel with your LOOT car, not the borrowed. It is also good form to let those that brought along a non borrowed to syphon gas first.

* If car has 2 unit fueltank and you want to refuel it, then leftover fuel (about 6.34 units) from fuelcan has been poured to ground. 25 units refill uses 3 cans of fuel.

* When tweaking cars, you will want to use tank sizes what are multiples of 8-10 units, so whole fuel canister is used without spilling anything to sand.

* Another approach is to have those 2 unit fueltanks at main combat cars, and to use "fueltank car" what serves fuel to battle-group. Though, it is also risky, if that car gets destroyed in battle.

Gangers

* Cargo some Tires. If you pack some tires along on your scouts, you add a few new 'internal' critical items that can be hit, instead of your gangers. Ghetto Kevlar.

* When recruiting new gangers, best available isn't a good option in SCAV; what's a 20 cyclist going to do for you? Recruit for what you need, there are no training centers.

* To keep water served to you gangers, ask if someone would give taxi for your ganger to Elmsfield. In Elmsfield you get very often water as prize in both requested and timed events. Remember water and food items are exeptional because those are only items what has global town locker space. No need to haul that water to your Somerset gangers. And if that your only driver dies in Elmsfield event, go quickly hire the new one from Elmsfileld tavern before that particular event ends, that way you don't need to ask again another taxi trip from Somerset to Elmsfield.

Materials

* Any weapon with more then 50% ammo can be 'trash'ed and it will place a clip of that ammo in the lockup.

* Lots of tradegoods are available, that isn't really posted on the forums or in the market. Ask in chat if there is something you want or need, and you can usually find it

* Dont forget to strip armor off before you trash a chassi for scrap. This is easily done by pressing one of the buttons A B or C instead of going to "modify amount and reducing all areas to 0.

* In footsquads, don't rummage through piles of junk. It can generate addition spawns of creatures, not that spawns is plural.

* Use calculator to plan armor patching to your car if you want to use scrap metal economically. If you add one point of armor, you use one whole scrap metal unit. also adding 16 points of C-class armor to Phoenix uses one scrap metal. The "rate" is mentioned in armor modify screen. Note also, that different car chassis has different ratios.

* Don't use any repairs automation, unless you are filthy rich and wasting raw materials doesn't concern you.
* Auto-fix uses scraps from other cities if there is no any in same city where car is being fixed. You don't get same advantage when using Modify values. That automation might warrant un-economic scrap expenses.

* Only useful automations are for Crew and Ammo.

Armor Types
Vehicular armor takes 3 forms; A, B and C.

The ONLY difference in the types of armor is the weight and the cost of each unit added or deleted to your car.

* A armor costs four times as much as B, but weighs half as much
* B armor is the standard armor
* C armor costs half as much as B, but weighs twice as much

It is possible to change between the three types of armor on a chassis by dropping the armor on all sides to zero, then selecting a new armor rating.

Chassis Strength
The chassis you mount it on also affects how effective your armor is.
You will notice that some chassis are "weak".... (See the Table of chassis listing to see the strength of various chassis).

B armor will not be as effective on the weak car as it will be on a strong chassis car. Therefore, your choice of a combat car should include the variations of weight gain vs speed vs weapon loadout with a mix to include the best of all three variables to give you the best chance of survival.
TODO:

Darkwind has 47 unique chassis, subcompacts, sedans, muscle cars, fast racers and trucks and more. Each chassis handles differently, but chassis in the same type (such as sedans) usually handle similarly with only minor differences in acceleration.
The chassis also determines where and how many weapons you can mount on it, most chassis have 2x front, 2x rear and 1x side mounts available.
The bulk available and engine bulk are the most important attributes for a chassis for scouting along with the vehicle's armor rating and capabilities.

Vehicles can also be fitted with a roll cage to reduce chances of internal damage and injuries from high-speed impacts.

You can view a handy table of all the chassis types here

Fame
As your gang is increasing its fame and reputation with the denizens of Evan, so to do your vehicles build their own rep.

The most common way vehicles become famous is by being used in events. Having your vehicle featured in the Gazette (either because of its design or because of its skin) also increases its notoriety.

* Renowned
* Famous
* Legendary
* ???

It is currently not known how many 'levels' of fame there are for vehicles. How does one get fame?

"Fame builds up through use, especially by winning professional events but also from finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in town events, and for wilderness use. Every time you rename a vehicle, it loses half of its fame. "

It takes *roughly* 60-75 scouts to hit Renowned with a vehicle.

NOTE: Renaming a famous vehicle will cause a loss of fame

The trade-off to vehicle fame is that the characters inside get 'substantially boosted courage', however they will not gain as much courage in those fights. This is similar to the Combat Psychologist Specialism.

Designs
There's a massive amount of possible custom designs, premade designs are used for league events, and NPCs cars in the wilderness also have a variety of premade designs they randomly choose from.

Possible Future Chassis
Very likely there's even more coming eventually.

Welcome! Hopefully, this will be an easy-to-follow, straightforward guide to getting started with Darkwind. If it isn't...either change it (it's a Wiki after all), or comment on it in the discussion section so somebody else can change it. :-)

Introductions
After you've signed up on the main site and created your gang, you'll end up on the web management interface of Darkwind. Here is where you'll plan your long term stuff, buy and sell things, recruit people and so on, while the client (Game) is more specialized toward participating in events. You can subscribe to events from both, so you can just fire up the client to start playing and getting the feeling of the game.
The client interface is pretty straightforward:

There is a big panel showing the global game chat (which is also available in game), there is a panel which shows the upcoming events to which you may register and the live events that you may spectate (or play if registered) and there is a panel listing the current players. It would be really unusual to be alone in the Lobby, so the first thing you should do is introduce yourself. A simple, 'Hi. I'm new' should suffice, and lets the veteran players and Marshals (players whose names are bracketed by asterisks (*)) know that you are new, and may need some help getting up and running.

Tutorial
Launch your tutorial by clicking the Tutorials button in the game client. (Even though the button says Tutorials, there is only one.) This will take you to the in-game interface, centered on your car. Follow the instructions literally to proceed forward. If you are stuck on a particular tutorial step, repeat what you're asked to do making sure to use the keys specified in the tutorial balloon. Here's a hint; you can run the tutorial as often as you like! Run it a second time to just drive around a bit and get used to the controls. You only get the prize money the first time through though.

Notice that the global lobby chat remains available on the top of the screen. This panel's content is controlled by the buttons directly under it: "Lobby" shows the global chat, "Events" shows the event log for the current game, while the "Team" button shows the private chat of the event you're in.

Now you've managed the basics of the game, there is still some information that you may find useful for more prolonged combats:
* hovering with the mouse on a car shows is "demoralized" status. Demoralized cars may continue fighting, when all the enemy's or your cars are demoralized the combat ends.
* during an event, hit F2, F3, and F4 to change what is displayed over vehicles. F2 cycles through several pieces of information on the first line. F3 cycles through those same pieces of information on the second line, and F4 cycles through them on the third line.
* you can resign via the menu available on the top right of the in-game screen or you can resign a particular car by right-clicking on that car.
* you can reload weapons via right clicking on the car that has a weapon to be reloaded

When you return to the Lobby, look for an event that is starting soon. In-town events are Races, Death Races, and Arena Combats, or their League equivalents.

After The Tutorial
So you tried out the tutorial. What next? Let's check out your gang! Fire up your browser and go to www.dark-wind.com (or click on the 'MY GANG' button in the game interface) and log on if required. You will be presented with several links across the top that you will become very familiar with: Gangs, Events, Squads, Characters, Vehicles, and Places.

Lets start with "Characters": Here you will see your first three gang members! I wouldn't get attached; many people lose them within a couple months. Don't worry; you will recruit more later. This page tells you a lot of stuff about your characters, but all you really want to know right now is driving skill and gunnery skill. Each character starts with one skill around 20, and the rest lower. Hopefully you have someone with good driving, and someone with good gunnery.

The next place to go is "Places": Select Somerset. You will see an image of Somerset; click on 'Dexter's Tavern'. Here you can recruit new characters into your gang. As a starting gang, you can recruit two free characters. After that the cost is the same as for everyone else. Note: The cost drops everyday until you can recruit another free character within a week. My suggestion is to look for drivers and gunners to start with; mostly gunners.

Lets go enter an event! Back to the Dark-Wind client.

It is recommended that you start with the Racing events, then progress to the Death Races, and finally to the Combats. Even in "controlled" town events, a character's death is very possible. A computer controlled car may ram you after you've resigned if you're in the way, or you may just just have a really unlucky crash. Still, consider resigning just a little before your car armor is worn out. Make sure you know all the key commands for in-town events. Hit [F1] to learn them all.

Pay particular attention when an enemy vehicle 'resigns' and TRY to make sure you do not fire at a resigned enemy. This is because each car in an in-town event belongs to an NPC gang, and that gang will seek revenge against you if you do not respect their resignation.

The League events provide League points in addition to prize money for contestants who place (usually 8th or higher).

Also, don't hesitate to ask others to join the event. Often, you will get some veteran players involved, and that will increase the prize money (and League Points for League events) available.

Doing the events in the order above will do a couple of things:
#Get you used to the various cars, and driving surfaces in Evan (Races)
#Get you used to managing your car and its weapons at the same time (Death Races)
#Introduce you to combat tactics (Combats)
#Teach you patience

The last one is really the most important, as patience is key when you get involved in wilderness scouting (Initial Scout Guide).

After Some More Practicing
After you're confident enough with the driving/shooting part of the game, you might want to ask some people to help you out on your first scout. Remember to prepare ahead of this so as to be ready when the opportunity to join a scouting arises; in order to do so you will need to return to the web management interface.

First of all, you'll need a car. If you don't feel ready to lose your main characters in this event you might consider hiring a few more recruits.

To choose a car, select Vehicles -> My Vehicles from the top navigation bar on the web interface. If you do not yet have a scout ready vehicle of your own, this page also includes the option for renting various kinds of vehicles; the "Antagonist" would be a good one for starters. Remember that rental cars don't have off-road wheels and may suffer on sandy terrain.

To recruit some characters to your gang, select Places -> Somerset from the navigation bar. Clicking on Dexter's Tavern will take you to a page where you can recruit more gangers. To man your new car, a driver and a heavy gunner will do.

If you're subscribed, you can take this opportunity to go from the Somerset page to the Marketplace to buy some more ammo for your guns. (You can see which guns you have mounted on your "Borrowed" car on your vehicle page)

Now go to the Vehicles page, select your chosen vehicle and assign a Driver and Gunner(s), along with ammunition (if subscribed), from the pop-up that appears. It is advised to have a Driver and a Gunner (or more) - at least - if your car can hold more than one gunner it will help you because the driver suffers a penalty to his gunnery skill because he's driving. Dedicated gunners do not suffer the this type of penalty. If you survive the encounter and win some loot, you can have one or more gunners get out and drive a looted car back. More about scouting on the dedicated pages: Initial Scout Guide

You're now ready to roll, so go to the lobby chat in the client and ask for somebody to help you out on scouting or just ask to join some other player's party. Let them know that this is your first scout because they will steer clear of more dangerous areas and offer you advice. They will provide you with a squad name to join along with the password of the scout, so go again to the web interface and select Squad -> Search Squads from the navigation bar; join the squad, add your vehicle (DOUBLE CHECK you have your driver and gunner(s) in the car, along with reloads if possible) and notify your squad leader in the lobby that you're ready. Shortly afterwards you will have the notification that the scouting event is starting and you'll be presented with the in-game view. Be sure to follow the advice of the other players to stay alive, and good luck!

Managing Your Gang
Once you get a few group scouts under your belt and have done a few in-town events, its time to start managing your gang. There are dozens of different philosophies to running a sucessful gang, but there are a few basics that everyone will need.

Begin by training a few of your characters in Scouting. The best way to do this is to recruit characters with the Scouting skill and put them in fast cars with moderately sized fuel tanks, and send them to towns near Somerset completing small missions. If you are attacked, simply outrun your enemies. You can chose to escape at 350 meters, and automatically escape at 500 meters. Eventually you will get a number of highly skilled scouts, which will reduce the danger of larger convoys of vehicles scouting and running between towns as long as you put a good scout in the convoy.

You will need to gain in-town fame and reputation to qualify for the more profitable missions. Check your gang's fame and reputation regularly to see the effects of your recent decisions. Check the notice board at the various town taverns for a list of missions, or advertise for a mission if you don't have sufficient fame and reputation.

Spelling changes
*Since this wiki is utilized and edited by people from multiple countries, particularly those that use British and American English, I suggest the Wikipedia guidelines be followed when it comes to 'correct' spellings.

Wikipedia Manual of Style
----

I really would like to see the main page in a more overviewable design,

e.g. instead of:

Guides
Read In-depth guides on various topics from experienced players. Beginners could be interested in the new player startup guide or how to drive or how to use weapons. Fresh subscribers should definitely read the initial scout guide before leaving town. If you want to lead a scout squad yourself give the Scout Leading Guide a try.

rather:

Guides
<br>- New player startup guide
<br>- How to drive
<br>- How to use weapons
<br>- Initial scout guide
<br>- Scout Leading Guide

comments?

* I think the only issue with a layout like that is that it presumes some knowledge on the part of the viewer/user. The narrative format provides a bit more 'leading' with the 'Fresh subscribers should...' and 'Beginners could be interested...' --Wikiadmin 20:10, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
* Additionally, since the links are 'highlighted' within the narrative they have the sort of 'call-out' a bullet-ed list provides. --Wikiadmin 20:16, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
* As a freshmen myself I think that even with the narrative new users are somewhat lost in all the features this game offers. I've added some meat on the new players guide but I think that some pages should be condensed on a single narrative page in a sort of "game manual" format - something that may also be condensed as a pdf weekly with themed background and stuff. Trouble is that until new players understands how friendly and open the community is, he's afraid to ask, add in the sheer amount of stuff this game has and new players don't even know what advice to ask for (I found myself in a game unable to keep the car at a steady - which is silly because I just needed to pull the handbrake, imagine me asking "how do I keep this car steady"? and the duh moment afterward) - if that is something that may be useful, I step forward to maintain it --LoSboccacc 16:10, 2 March 2010 (UMT)
Bugs in Vehicle Creation Applications
Known Bugs:

The weight of each point of armor on a vehicle changes depending on the chassis, but the Darkwind Vehicle Designer uses the same weight per point of armor in all circumstances.

*No, the Armor Weight values vary by chassis, but some chassis don't have their Armor Weights defined (because I didn't have access to the chassis), and those are 0. Regardless, the DB values are editable, so if you know the weights for a chassis you can modify them yourself.

*On the Database page, select 'chassis' in the dropdown, and double-click on any entry.
--Wikiadmin 16:01, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

I've also found the final weight in Car Builder is rarely an exact match the weight listed in the game itself, but I haven't figured out why.

*I think it is because the actual weight per point is a decimal/float, and the values used in the DB are numbers that seemed to get the closest in the builds I tested.
--Wikiadmin 16:01, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

The fuel range calculation in the Darkwind Vehicle Designer isn't right, so don't pay attention to it.

*It was always off a bit (hence the 'Est.' for 'Estimated'), and is now more off since the math changed, and 'A' armor gets a bonus, and ...
--Wikiadmin 16:01, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
*Triferus: Hmm well are you using the 135,000 * Fuel Units / Weight calculation or the old one, as per the Travel page? It looks like the old one to me...
**The released version of the application is using the old/original math, as it was correct at the time of release. I changed it in my development version, but haven't released for a number of reasons.
--Wikiadmin 23:48, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

When Car Builder generates a banner for a configuration, it always identifies the armor as Grade "B" even if you actually chose "A" or "C".

*Can't help with this one, sorry.
