Under certain conditions, vehicles may be set on fire. There are many contributors to this condition, including fire weapons (flamer, napalm, etc.) and other weapons that have an increased chance to start a fire. Engine damage always has a chance to start a fire. Damage of fuel cans or ammo can cause a fire. Every turn a fire can become more or less intense.
According to information gathered from the forums *sam* has indicated:
"Characters who are conscience within the vehicle on fire will work to put the fire out. The more characters within, the more effective they will be (Feb, 2011)."
"The chances of a car-on-fire taking damage or exploding increases depending on how much on-fire it is."
"Extra chance of a vehicle catching fire when it has ammo or fuel cargo damaged (May, 2010)."
"Explosions are more violent if a vehicle has a lot of fuel in its fueltank, in cargo, or has a lot of explosive ammunition (May, 2010)."
"Exploding vehicles now create puddles of flaming oil, depending on how much fuel they have onboard (cargo+fueltank) (May, 2010)."
"An explosion will only happen if the car is burning moderately or worse and the fire will only go out when the vehicle is burning mildly. /// **EDIT January 2014** Vehicles can explode the immediate turn after catching fire. /// For the moment vehicles will have to be burning for at least four turns before an explosion may occur (May, 2010)."
The "stages" of fire are: "smolders", "flickers with small flames", "burns moderately", "burning merrily", "burns fiercely", "is engulfed in an inferno". Also, a car now "May explode any second!". Explosion is imminent - 5 turns at most - though a vehicle can still spontaneously explode with a lesser fire.
